It’s hard to imagine the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) without Spider-Man, or even the future of cinema without him. After making over $1.6 billion at the box office, it has single-handedly revitalised the industry and ended the argument that audiences won’t return to the cinema due to the pandemic. Tom Holland is at the height of his powers now, starring in three of the top six highest box office breakers all off time (he also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame). Fans are expecting a quick turnaround on a new Spidey as a result, but the actor still hasn’t committed to the part.
Spider-Man has always been one of Marvels most popular characters, even one of the most popular superheroes of all time. The box office for the latest instalment has proved that, so there will be a lot of audience members anticipating the next film.
First introduced in 2019’s Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man came in swinging strong, leading to his solo outing Homecoming. This was followed by his appearances in Infinity War and Endgame, before his sequel Far From Home.
Already making six appearances in the MCU, he has shot up to be one of the most integral parts of the universe. Following the events of No Way Home, it seems all but confirmed that he will be back. Yet, Holland is still weighing up his options.

The star said in an interview with Deadline: “The truthful answer, and I’ve done a whole press tour where all I do is lie. The truth is, and you’re not going to like the truth, I don’t know the answer to that question. This film for me was as special as an experience could ever be, sharing the screen with these guys. Playing Spiderman could be quite an alienating experience because, you know, we’re the only three blokes who have done it. So, to share that with you two, it’s been such a wonderful experience, of which I have such amazing memories.”
He added: “I don’t know, there’s part of me that feels like it’s the perfect time to jump off the building and swing off into the sunset and let the next lucky young kid come in to don the suit, or I might, I don’t know, buy a new house and need a paycheck and I’ll be back.”
His latest comments come after the star already hinted at the idea of leaving acting altogether, instead focusing on the quiet life and starting a family. Speaking to People, the star said: “I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve been so grateful to Marvel and Sony for giving us the opportunity and keeping us on and allowing our characters to progress. It’s been amazing And that’s why for me, I don’t want to say goodbye to Spider-Man — but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Man.”
He added that he didn’t want to hold back the next young star from playing the part, thinking now would be a great time for a “Spider-Man that’s more diverse.” He said it would be great to see a Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman in a future movie, adding it would be “nice to see something different.”

He continued: “I’ve spent the last six years being so focused on my career. I want to take a break and focus on starting a family and figuring out what I want to do outside of this world. I love kids. I can’t wait to be a dad — I can wait and I will, but I can’t wait! If I’m at a wedding or a party, I’m always at the kids’ table hanging out. My dad’s been such a great role model for me. I think I’ve got that from him. So I think I’d be a primary school teacher or something like that.”
At the end of November 2021, Sony producer Amy Pascal announced Spider-Man 4, 5 and 6. However, Sony never backed up these claims, and the Spidey boss has since walked back on the confirmation.
Speaking to Variety, she said: “She long as [Tom Holland] wants to make Spider-Man movies, we’ll make Spider-Man movies. But I’m a producer and I always think everything is going to work out.”
When asked directly if fans should expect to see Holland get back in the Spider-suit, Pascal joked: “Don’t get me in trouble again. If I have my way we will.”
